Anne Baird, formerly Farrell, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2020 at the age of 94.5, a moment after receiving the Eucharist from Father Brady.

Anne was well-known for her love of hot dogs, her big family and many friends, and a little place that some of you may have heard of… Brooklyn.

Anne, or Annie, as she was known when running around 8th Street off Third Avenue, never forgot her roots. Raised in a cold-water flat, she always appreciated the little things in life—a glass of Pepsi, a holler “Hello Anne!” from a neighbor, or a Nathan’s hot dog (really any type would do).

She and her friend, Mary Policke, often drove to Coney Island on Anne’s birthday for a “frankfurter.” She was born in February, so you understand how committed they were. This went on til fairly recently.

Anne had four siblings, Jackie (John), Madeline (Mary), Eileen (Helen) and Bud (Michael) and parents, Michael and Maggie (Margaret), whom she always described as “wonderful.”

Anne was schooled in Brooklyn, at St. Thomas Aquinas grammar school – where she received the “General Excellence” medal at graduation--and graduated from Bishop McDonnell High School. She was proficient in Pig Latin.

She worked as the “mail girl” for the Central Railroad of New Jersey in Jersey City where she met Jimmy Baird.

The two hit it off, drawn together by a love of singing, and often performed in shows put on for retirees of the railroad. They married in 1951 and enjoyed a life of service, singing and silliness, all while raising six girls.

Anne was known for many things— a non-judgmental heart, never a bad word about anyone, a great friend to have a cup of tea with, service to her community and devotion to her faith-- but the thing she’d probably most like to be remembered for was her love of FUN.

She pursued it like a life’s calling, ensuring any task or event, no matter how dull, could be enjoyed. She’d don a tutu and taps if the need arose, belt out a tune if a song was needed or just be the calm in the storm with her dry wit. She referred to her family, including herself, as “The Loonies.”

She is survived by her six daughters: Judy Baird, Barbara Piscopo (Danny), Peggy Valdes (Bobby), Coleen Baird, Christine Baird (John Hassell), and Carol Baird (Csaba Gajdos) and her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her baby brother, Bud (Marilyn), whom she called Silas, and her kitchen, which she called “Grand Central Station.”

The entire Baird family. The occasional impromptu Thanksgiving dinner. A smile that lights up a room. A singing voice that...well it's hard to explain. Wait, it gets you singing with her. Always, always asking about my kids and really wanted to know! Walking, walking walking. Spontaneous laughing. Her accent from a foreign country rumored to be Brooklyn. These are a few of my favorite things about "Mrs. Baird". One of my favorite people.
