Obituary for Cy Lloyd Roberts

Cy Lloyd Roberts
Cy Lloyd Roberts
June 23, 1927 – August 20, 2016

The third of five children, Cy was born in Hartford, CT where his family owned a hardware store. All four brothers and one nephew, graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. After graduating from the USMMA in 1950, Cy served in the Korean War Theater involved in the Wonsan and Inchon landings, and was decorated with the Atlantic and Pacific War Zone medals.
After an honorable discharge, he continued his service as a weekend warrior in the U.S. Naval Reserve. For five decades Cy was also an active member of the USMMA Superintendent's Council, and received the Meritorious Alumni Service Award.

In 1951, Cy married his college sweetheart, Patricia Oestreich, whose family lived in Kenilworth, Long Island. The couple settled in Manhasset, N.Y. for nearly 60 years ago where they raised their three children, Richard, Cynthia and Christine. During those years, Pat Roberts was an active member of the community, serving as Commissioner of the Manhasset Park District as well as head of volunteers and a board member at North Shore Hospital. Both Cy and Pat were also members of Temple Judea and Cy served as a trustee. The couple retired to The Villages, Florida.

Cy worked in business for many years, including for Moseley, Hallgarten and Estabrook and E.F. Hutton. He was also the founder and President of T. T. Travis Corp., a company that manufactures nautical accessories. In later years, Cy worked for the Port Authority of New York at the World Trade Center, and on 9/11 helped rescue survivors by directing the Staten Island Ferry to evacuate people from lower Manhattan to safety on Staten Island. Then he rejoined first responders at the World Trade Center in the search for survivors. The Governor of the State of New York later commended the 72 year-old Cy Roberts for his service and bravery.

A devoted father and husband, Cy enjoyed organizing family trips and activities. He especially liked swimming and all water sports, skiing, and Broadway theatre. After sailing on merchant ships to Asia, Cy also was an early aficionado of Chinese cuisine and often took his family to the Chinese New Year’s celebrations in lower Manhattan. Another favorite pastime was teaching his children how to drive a stick shift on a U.S. army jeep he picked up as an extra family car. In his retirement, Cy was an avid softball player.

Cy Roberts is survived by his wife Patricia, his children, Richard (Cindy), Cynthia (Thom), and Christine (Stephen), five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
