Robert C. Thoering, 56, of Middle Village, New York died April 12, 2020.

He was born on January 3, 1964 to Robert T. Thoering and Mary A. Thoering (nee Duncan).

Robert graduated from Archbishop Molloy High school in 1982. He continued his education at St. John’s University, graduating in 1986 with a BA in history and a minor in theology. He also received a masters degree from St. John’s in 1991 and Fordham University in 2003.

He taught at Our Lady of Hope in Queens and was principal of Our Lady of Refuge in Brooklyn. He was most recently at I.S. 125 in Queens.

Robert spent 34 years in education. His passion was teaching and wanted to be one for as long as I can remember. He was tough but well respected.

Robert was also a member of St. Margaret, our childhood parish. He was on the parish council. He loved to sing and was a past member of the church choir. He also enjoyed tending to his garden, taking relaxing trips to Saratoga Springs, traveling the world, and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Thoering. He is survived by his brother, John Thoering of Southington, CT and his beloved partner, Barry Stockman of Middle Village. Our family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Long Island Jewish Hospital for the help and care.

I remember when I met Robert at St. John’s University at Campus Ministry in the early 1980s. He was such a gentle, patient and kind person. I will never forget the fun we had as he taught me to swim in our friend Michelle’s pool. Barry, you made Robert so happy. He will forever be your guardian angel. The world is better for Robert having been in it.
Love you, Robert. Melinda and Dee

Mr. Thoering is 100% responsible for cultivating my interest in the English language, which led to my doing a variety of writing projects, joining and becoming the editor-in-chief of my college newspaper and ultimately graduating with a degree in journalism/creative writing.

Mr. Thoering was my teacher in both fifth and eighth grades. He was tough, but fair. He encouraged blossoming talent and held you accountable when he knew you weren’t giving your all.

I wish I still had my Our Lady of Hope yearbook to share his photo and the good wishes he gave me when he signed my yearbook.

Mr. Thoering holds a special place in my heart and I shall never forget him.

Dear John and Barry,

When I learned that Robert had passed I was heartbroken. We spent our entire childhood together and it is like a part of me is gone. I did not know he had been ill.
My parents always said we were lucky to have the Thoerings as neighbors because good neighbors were necessary for a happy home life. And the the Thoerings were the very best of neighbors.
I have many joyful memories of being a kid on the block with Robert- so many days of swimming, kids’ parties and street games.
I’m admire Robert’s commitment to helping others through education. His good works will endure. I am very grateful that he reconnected with me recently. It was a very generous and kind gesture on his part.

Please accept the deepest condolences of me, and my wife, Peggy.
