Margaret "Peggy" Swiatocha
Margaret “Peggy” Rose Swiatocha
Margaret “Peggy” R. Swiatocha, (nee Assante), entered into God’s loving care at the age of 91 on Monday, February 5, 2018. Born and raised in New York, NY, she was a lifelong resident of Middle Village.
Peggy was born on October 7, 1926 to Philip and Loretta (nee Kehoe) Assante. She graduated from Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in Brooklyn, NY, and later from St. Catherine’s Hospital and Nursing School located in Bushwick, NY. After receiving her Registered Nurse (R.N.) Diploma, Peggy enjoyed a long and rewarding career in nursing that was divided into two phases – before and after the birth of her children. She specialized in Operating Room nursing and supported the patients and staff at several New York hospitals including St. Catherine’s, Greenpoint and Woodhull until her retirement at age 75.
Margaret Rose married Stanley A. Swiatocha, a New York City Police Officer, who she referred to as “her only boyfriend.” They received nine children into their warm and wonderful home. Together they instilled in their “kids” the meaning of faith in God, respect and love for others, an untiring work ethic, and the need for education.
Peggy was a lifetime member of the community at St. Margarets R.C. in Middle Village. She relished her memberships in the Christian Mothers, St. Martha’s Guild, Senior Citizens, Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary, and other organizations. For many years, she could be seen at the annual fundraising bazaar and Red Cross blood drives at St. Margarets.
At an early age, she acquired a talent for sewing and later demonstrated a robust interest in crocheting as well as knitting. Her children and grandchildren reported that she loved to assemble puzzles and read novels, newspapers and the Readers Digest.
After learning about Peggy’s passing, many relatives and friends stated they will always remember her genuine kindness, understated sense of humor and welcoming smile.
