Message to the Family: I met Rick through karate and over the years we became friends sharing a love of music and a similar sense of humor. He was such a warm person, quick to smile and laugh but with a complexity and depth to his personality. He was also an amazing teacher, encouraging but tough, I feel lucky to have trained under him. I would look forward to his Saturday classes. Even though we had lost touch a few years after I moved to Los Angeles, I consider him a good friend and it breaks my heart that he died so young. My deepest condolences to his family, this must be such a huge loss. He is someone who will not be forgotten and he will stay in my heart, gone too soon but leaving an infinite trail of light behind him.

Message to the Family: Rick was my friend, confidant, sensei, and so much more. I had the privilege and fortune to know him for 18 years. He took me on as an overweight, out of shape student in his Karate class, and from there helped me progress in the martial arts, my health and my life. Over the years we shared much – our love for the martial arts, photography, beer, music, watches and the world at large. He became a part of our family – celebrating birth days, holidays and life in general. I was always impressed by how easily he moved from one group of people to the next, from one domain to the next – a true renaissance man – always with a ready smile and open and warm demeanor. His love of New York was also a signature characteristic – and as others have noted – he embodied the New York spirit. He enriched my life and the life of my family in so many ways and I know that I am a healthier, more interesting and better person for having known him. I will be at a real loss now when I look at the hole in my weekly calendar where our training sessions were and of course the hole in my heart that his loss has brought. I do know that I cherish all of my time with him and the many memories, large and small that he gave to me. Rest in Power my friend.

Because you loved Jim, you also loved and support me as his sister, including my music endeavors from way back in the early 90's until just a few weeks ago when you "liked" some of my posts on FaceBook. It was because of Facebook that I was able to keep in touch after moving to Florida so many years ago, and how I got to experience your awesome photography of my home city of NY, and your deep love for your buddy Magnus. I didn’t know what a Cane Corso was till you posted about him. I also got a kick out of your outspoken political posts about Barry O Bomber and the other name you had for Hillary, which I can't bring my little Christian fingers to type (LOL). I looked forward to what you had to say about the political goings on and other stuff. Since you passed only 2 days ago, I learned about your passion for MMA, which I also love. I feel sad that we never had a conversation about that, but you can be sure when my husband and I watch UFC 202 this weekend, and every one after, that I'll be thinking of you. Of course I'll always remember New School - Queens Crew, and coming along to your practices with my bro Jim. I was never lucky enough to catch a live show (Jim would warn me about the mosh pits! LOL) but I got to see some video. I'm so glad you lived out your passions, Rick, and that you were able to share those with so many, ya heard? You said “ya heard” and “how ya living” for as longs as I knew you, maybe 30 years I believe! It was always cute, though cute might be too fluffy a word for a hard core New Yorker like you, but cute is what I always felt about ya, and I’m sticking to it!
